Maintaining Stillness
"...sitting quietly for 30 minutes every morning (a mere 3% of our waking hours). The point of gathering stillness is not to enrich the sanctuary or mountaintop, but to bring that calm into the motion, the commotion of the world." ~ P. Iyer
As I sit in my comfy reading chair thinking of how fast January swept by, I practice being still, being calm. Just listening to the sound of my own breath, the breezes that blow outside my open window, the sounds that make the outdoors so inviting. My chimes, the song of the morning doves as they take a quick dip in my birdbath. Then a car horn, then a train....not jiving with my "calm," I'm trying to focus on. But those too are part of the cacophony outside our windows, out there, in the big wide world. And this is the work.
It's relatively easy to sit in a calm atmosphere or on our yoga mat and BE calm. The practice is beyond our mat, the practice really begins when we are out and about and dealing with loud noises, incessant emails & text messages, negative people. How do we maintain stillness in the midst of all that? There's an old joke where someone asks "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" And the answer is "Practice, practice, practice." Yes, we practice being calm, a mere 3% of our day. We breathe with our awareness glued to that inhale/exhale and we allow everything around us to just happen, it's going to anyway.
So let it be, let it go and keep breathing!!
Lots of talking about that "self care" stuff going on out there. I read it everywhere. And now it's my turn to preach it....with a little love and tenderness. February is the perfect month, now is the perfect time to love on yourself and create a little self care ritual of sitting quietly, being calm, breathing and practicing that stillness stuff!
